What types of weeds are growing on my lawn?

Weeds are classified into three main groups, all of which grow differently depending on the type of lawn grass:

Annuals

These types of weeds are the easiest to kill. They grow, produce seeds, and as the name suggests, die within a year. Certain types of annual weeds can survive a second year in warmer climates.

Biennials

These types of weeds live for two years. Their first year involves vegetative development while the second year is dedicated to flowering and seed development.

Perennials

These are weeds that have lived for more than two years. They rejuvenate from season to season.

Which is the best weed control method?

Weed control is aimed at stopping weeds from reaching maturity, the stage when they are at their most harmful to your garden or lawn. Weed control is done manually using techniques such as applying mulch, soil cultivation, and herbicidal spray. Here are the most used weed control methods:

Weed control by hand

Removing weeds manually by hand is perhaps the most selective and environmentally-friendly way of controlling weeds on your property. In the section below, we are going to take a look at some key tips to keep in mind when using this method:

Weeds are much easier to remove after it has rained.

  • Act as soon as weed appears on your lawn.
  • Pull out the weed plants from the base, ensuring that you pluck out the roots.
  • Utilize a garden fork to remove larger weeds with extensive roots such as dandelions and thistles.

Weed control and prevention by herbicides

If the area you are planning to landscape is large or overgrown with weeds, then manual weed removal may not be practical. In such situations, your best option is to use herbicides. Herbicides are highly effective in eliminating weeds when applied correctly. Here are the two types of herbicides:

Systemic herbicides

These types of herbicides are absorbed through the plant’s leaves and roots and transported through its vascular system killing the entire plant.

Contact herbicides

As opposed to systemic herbicides, these types of herbicides kill the plant from the outside. They kill the part of the plant that meets the chemical. This way, they can stop the plant’s photosynthesis process essentially killing the plant.

Within the above two categories, herbicides are further grouped into two categories: selective and non-selective.

  • Selective herbicides are designed to kill only certain types of weeds, grasses, sedges, and other plants without harming others.  They will eliminate weeds from your lawn without harming your lawn.
  • Non-selective herbicides are formulated to eliminate all plants available on the application site. Ideally, you should only consider this option when preparing to reestablish your lawn.

Herbicides are also classified as pre-emergent or post-emergent depending on what stage they should be applied.

Pre-emergent herbicides are used as a preventative weed control method. Essentially, they block weeds from growing in your yard. They attack weed seeds before they become established. They work by forming a chemical barrier on the soil level that inhibits the germination of any new seedlings. Timing is critical when it comes to the application of pre-emergent herbicides as they are not formulated to kill already-established plants and the barrier only lasts for 6-8 weeks (about 2 months). Ideally, you should apply it early in the season.

Proper planning and caution are necessary when applying pre-emergent herbicides as they’ve been found to be harmful to some plants.

Post-emergent herbicides are formulated to attack weeds that have already germinated. Ideally, these herbicides should be applied later in the growth season once the weeds have started growing and before they start seeding.

Organic weed control

If you have children and pets that regularly play on the lawn, you might want a safer weed control method. The last thing you want is for your children and pets to meet weed-killing chemicals. Cats and dogs are fond of chewing plants and grass. And if these plants have been treated with dangerous compounds, your pets may suffer long-term health consequences. Some chemical herbicides are also known to cause cancer.

Most chemical-based herbicides use glyphosate as a primary ingredient. Glyphosate has been found to be problematic for the environment and health. This chemical accumulates in the soil. Exposure to this soil for extended periods can lead to cancer and genetic mutations.

Environmental problems can arise when these chemicals seep into the soil and get into the groundwater. The contaminated groundwater then flows into our waterways including streams, rivers, and even water reservoirs. This not only affects aquatic life but also the water we use for drinking and household use. For these reasons, many people are opting for bio-safe weed control methods.

Organic weed spraying compounds don’t use any of these harmful chemicals, which makes them a much safer option for your family and the environment. What’s more, you can continue enjoying your yard immediately after the treatment. They are also the best option for controlling and eliminating weeds in your flower beds.

Weed-controlled fabric is another natural, non-toxic option. It is typically installed around the base of trees and shrubs. This fabric prevents all weed seeds buried in the soil from germinating. It also helps to minimize the need for harmful weed control herbicides.
